The Emperor

The Emperor #4- Ruled by Aries which is ruled by Mars- Fire Element

Here we have the energy of fire. Outward moving energy.  The Emperor is the ruler of his Kingdom, he is courage, strength, decisiveness, leadership, the controller.  He leads and takes control just like the fiery sign of Aries.  Aries leads the head and as the Emperor he must be in control of his everything. He tends to think in the qualities of logic and reason. At times he can become egotistical and stubborn in his ways.   He does not doubt his decisions.  Mars is the red planet of action, aggression, self-defense and war.  These are all qualities required by the Emperor.  He must lead and create control out of chaos

The Hierophant

The Hierophant# 5- ruled by Taurus which is ruled by the planet Venus- Earth Element

Although Taurus is a sign of the Earth and carries the qualities of stubbornness, practicality, determination, ambition, stoic and materialistic energy, Taurus shares the Venus traits of beauty, artistry and the love of luxury and comfort.  The Hierophant requires the qualities of determination, practicality, and the ability to be stoic, but if you look at religion and spirituality there is a lot of beauty and luxury as well as ascetics involved in ritual and the beauty of the interior and exterior of the church.

Venus is the planet of pleasure, beauty, love, attraction and the arts.  Venus can help to influence as well as enhance the arts and self-expression such as in writing, dance, music and painting.  Venus also rules over love of all kinds, love of community, self and passionate love. Here we have the energy of Gemini, The Twins, and The Lovers.  Gemini's carry the energy of great communicators which is also the energy of Mercury.  Mercury is about clear communication of all kinds and you can see how this would be key to the Lovers card.  We also have the energy of focus with Mercury.  If you remember that the Lover's card is also about making decisions, then communication and focus are very important skills to have when moving through the Lover's energy.

Herbs of Mercury

Since Mercury governs both the nervous and respiratory system it is involved with conscious and mental focus, so the herbs that relate to Mercury are often gentle yet stimulating.  They can excite the nervous system through taste and smell as well as to help to heal the respiratory system.  Mercurial herbs bring in clarity and focus and open up the mind and lungs for a fresh breath.
